Doctor Blase is an upcoming 2021 American animated dark fantasy occult detective gothic horror superhero web television series created for Inferno Scope by Trailblazer101, who serves as the showrunner, director, writer, producer, and composer, and is based on the character of the same name created by Trail as an analog to the Marvel Comics character Doctor Strange. The series is produced and distributed by Trail Blazer Studios and was initially developed as Doctor Trail to be inspired by creator-owned properties before being significantly re-developed with similarities to several Doctor Strange media. It stars Bryce Johnson as the voice of Doctor Travis Sebastian Blase, alongside Paget Brewster, Khary Payton, Richard Chamberlain, Jason Isaacs, Lacey Chabert, Ben Schwartz, Courtney B. Vance, Ken Watanabe, Patrick Warburton, and Daniel Hagen in supporting roles, with April Stewart, Paul F. Tompkins, and Christian Slater joining for the second season. In Doctor Blase, famed psychologist Doctor Travis Blase goes on a self-reflected journey which leads him to become a mystic sorcerer for the ancient order the Blaze Enchanters as he engages in conquest against the newly-freed dark forces of the world while mastering the dark arts, and later begins to train the sorceress Natalie Van Helsing / Luminous Hex to control her chaotic powers until she accidentally unless dark forces from within the Multiverse and falls into a coma.

Trail began developing the series in December of 2018 as a loose interpretation of the film Doctor Trail following its cancellation earlier that month, with it featuring characters that were inspired by some users who had been re-purposed and altered from that film, while the premiere was set for November of 2020. A spin-off series centered on a creator-inspired character that was original to this series was being planned the next February to continue from plot points in it ahead of a planned second season. By July of 2019, Trail began re-developing this series' concepts to differentiate from the basis film and instead have more original concepts and storylines, with the premiere being delayed to August of 2021, which were followed by several character changes and the announcement of the spin-off series which remained in development despite the changes. By that December, Trail abandoned the creator-inspired elements of the series, prompting the characters roster to be changed and the spin-off series to be replaced with the anthology Blaze Enchanters, and in January of 2020, the series' direction began to closely adapt from several of the Doctor Strange comics and media, particularly after Scott Derrickson's exit from directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), with Trail choosing to fulfill the director's vision for that film within the series. That February, the series was re-titled to Doctor Blase along with the titular character after the series was expanded to analog the Doctor Strange media for its' storyline and gothic horror tone, with the voice cast led by Bryce Johnson being assembled by then along with a second season being ordered to adapt from the aforementioned film. By that April, another spin-off was announced as Van Helsing Hex, while the first and second season premieres for this series were both moved forward to their current slots to be in-line with the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after it was altered during that month, causing the premiere for Van Helsing Hex to also be affected.

Doctor Blase is scheduled to be released on Inferno Scope and will premiere with its' first season on February 5th, 2021, with a total of 13 episodes concluding on April 30th, 2021, while a second season was officially ordered on February 2nd, 2020, and will premiere on May 13th, 2022, with an addition of 13 episodes concluding on August 5th, 2022. Two spin-off television series, Van Helsing Hex and the anthology and prequel Blaze Enchanters, are scheduled to premiere on October 21st, 2022, and on February 3rd, 2023, on Inferno Scope, each with a total of 13 episodes, as well.

Synopsis

Set in a mystical world that has been prospering of glory and hope for centuries, the dark sorcerer Sinistero (Daniel Hagen) has escaped from his eternal exile and has now summoned the return of his dangerous forces to subjugate the world under the rule of the malice Mormanno to claim his glory. In this time of chaos, the ancient Arcane Shaman (Richard Chamberlain) has tasked his disciples Piers the Novice (Khary Payton) and Count Lysander (Jason Isaacs) to recruit and train famed psychologist Doctor Travis Sebastian Blase (Bryce Johnson) after journeying to their temple to combat against these new threats and prevent darkness from consuming the world, only to discover the horrid truth behind Sinistero's devious schemes and the entire mystic community which raises more questions beyond their teachings.

In season two, Doctor Blase begins to train gifted sorceress Natalie Van Helsing (April Stewart) in becoming the Luminous Hex through the ways of the mystic arts after she accidentally unleashes a force of endless darkness (Christian Slater) upon the world and falls into a coma as the darkness consumes her soul, which brings the entire divided mystic world together as the Multiverse is torn apart, paving the descent for chaos to erupt across the known realities as a former friend turned enemy makes an unlikely realliance in a grand cause.

A sorcerer for the Blaze Enchanters who guarded the Chicago Adytum up until his warrior death against Sinistero to save Doctor Blase in a fight to save the rest of the worlds, although he remained consciously separate from his corpse as his soul traveled to the Reverie Dimension where it was later retrieved by Blase to save the Multiverse from falling apart.
A wise mystic sorcerer who serves as the caretaker of N'Kant-Tam and looms around the temple under a watchful eye, although he is initially mistaken by Doctor Blase as the Mystic Master rather than The Arcane Shaman.
A mountain climber and hiker who sustained a serious spinal injury after a fatal fall which left him paralyzed in the neck down but sought mystical practicing from the Blaze Enchanters and informs Travis Blase of their temple N'Kant-Tam where he received his healing, although is attacked and left paralyzed to die by Count Lysander in his campaign against sorcery.

Amaranth is sought out by Doctor Blase to reclaim the Eye of Flarez from the past after it was destroyed by Sinistero so he can use it to foil Gehenna's plot, although Amaranth pits Blase with a grave challenge to prove his nobility to the Multiverse.

Antagonists

A radical exiled member of the Blaze Enchanters and formerly set to be the Mystic Master succeeding Alaric / The Arcane Shaman who was driven to practicing in the dark arts to summon the malice Mormanno with his Avant-Garde followers and comes into conflict with Doctor Blase in his takeover of the mystic world.
A mystical being imbued with eternal darkness who is the malicious ruler of the Morbid Dimension who has longed for his freedom to subjugate Earth and the mystical world under his dark rule and exploits Sinistero and the Wandering Ghouls to achieve this goal.
A dark primordial being and the sole product of the Reverie Dimension who was outcasted from the rest of the mystical worlds for his dastardly grim nature and feeds off of the fears and selfish desires of unhealthy individuals to fuel his expansive grasp on the foundations of the Multiverse. Gehenna uses his soft-spoken prophetic ways to manipulate Natalie Van Helsing into accidentally conjuring a spell that opens up a breach within the Multiverse to capture the tainted souls on Earth and turn them into fear energy to energize his freedom, which gets increasingly more unstable as he gets Doctor Blase and Count Lysander to intervene in it.

Additionally, Jason Isaacs returns to voice Earl Lysander / Count Lysander as an antagonist in the second season after serving as a protagonist for the first, while in the first and second season Daniel Hagen also voices the Avant-Garde turned Wandering Ghouls servants to his character Sinistero after defecting from the Blaze Enchanters along with co-voicing with Josh Keaton the Time Apparatuses who aid Amaranth in the second season.

Production

Conception and initial approach

Initial work with creator influences

The character of "Doctor Trail Stange" was coined by RealGameTime on October 17th, 2017, after Trailblazer101's avatar of Doctor Strange from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film of the same name running with his hands in the air. This name was later shortened to "Doctor Trail" by GameTime when decided for potential versions of Trail that could appear in his app GameTime: Game Breaker, before it was used as the basis for the film Doctor Trail that was created by Searingjet on June 8th, 2018, which Trail's production company Trail Blazer Studios was associated with. After that film was canceled on December 18th, 2018, Trail was prompted to create a television series for Trail Blazer Studios to be loosely inspired by that film on December 23rd, 2018, using the Doctor Trail name for the main character, and on December 28th, 2018, Trail established the supporting characters to consist of Trail the Whale, inspired by that saying, and content creators as Bricky Blocks, Jedi, and Shade Narwhalton, all of which were re-purposed from the basis film except for the latter. The character of Vesp from the initial film was considered to be incorporated into the series but was not added due to the presence of other creator inspired characters. The studio Paramount Television was chosen to distribute the series after their sister film company Paramount Pictures had previously been set to distribute the base film, with the series' premiere set to begin during November of 2020 on the television network Frick TV.

On January 17th, 2019, Trail incorporated the character of RatBot into the series to be based on a Discord bot that was commonly associated with the character Jedi, and on January 28th, 2019, Trail had chosen to rename Shade Narwhalton to Shade the Apprentice to avoid confusion with a character using that name that was previously part of The LEGO Blazer Movie franchise. On February 18th, 2019, Trail began developing a spin-off television series to be centered on that character entitled Shade the Apprentice that was chosen to move forward rather than a spin-off film for the film character after that was canceled to focus on continuing the story from The LEGO Blazer Movie (2018).

On March 1st, 2019, Trail revealed that the series was intended to feature adaptations of several online occurrences associated with characters interpreted in the series, such as disagreements surrounding the base creator of Jedi that would be used for the first season which would've featured the introductions of other creator-influenced characters, and an espionage scandal that was to be used for an intended second season and would've explored different worlds and the introduction of a character loosely inspired by a combination of creators leading said occurrences that since evolved into The Hack-Monger from The LEGO Blazer Movie franchise, while on March 9th, 2019, Trail added the characters Captain Jet and Miles the Mage to the series that would be part of that intended direction, while noting that the character Vesp had the potential to appear in a second season that would follow a time travel storyline similar to the basis film and the character arc of Future Trojan from original concepts for the film The LEGO Blazer Movie 2 prior to it becoming The LEGO Blazer Movie 2: Broken Dimensions (2021).

Re-development with original concepts

On July 12th, 2019, Trail ultimately decided to re-develop the series with a different plot and concepts that would distance it from the similarities to the Doctor Trail film that he was not fond of, due to the overabundance of creator-inspired content and the depiction of his character in that film, choosing for the series to instead feature vocal similarities with the Marvel Comics character Doctor Strange, who was the basis of the Doctor Trail character, to be present throughout the series. At this time, Trail Blazer Studios took over distribution for the series and set it to release exclusively on their streaming service Inferno Scope, with the thirteen-episode first season having its premiere pushed back to August 6th, 2021 to conclude on October 29th, 2021. Because of this, the creator-inspired elements of the plot and characters from the Doctor Trail film including Jedi, Trail the Whale, Captain Jet, and RatBot were removed from the series while Bricky Blocks was replaced with Lord Evandar, who was intended to serve as an analog to the Marvel character Kaecilius, and the character Alana Listra was added as an analog to Clea, both of which were done to incorporate influences from media associated with Doctor Strange. By then, the characters Shade the Apprentice and Miles the Mage remained intact for the series due to their original conceptions that were tied to the mystical approach for it, with Trail intending to continue work on the Shade the Apprentice spin-off series as he also stepped back from plans to incorporate Vesp as a new character in the series due to the re-developments away from the Doctor Trail film.

On July 20th, 2019, Trail announced the Shade the Apprentice spin-off television series with its premiere set for June 3rd, 2022, with the plot established to be set after Doctor Trail's disappearance on a lonesome journey after tracking a mystical foe in the first season of this series and before his return for an intended second season, while Shade the Apprentice was to be tasked with protecting the mystical world from a weakened structure after Miles the Mage's death, and the following day, Evandar's title was changed to "Master". On July 26th, 2019, Trail added Mormanno as an analog to Dormammu, while on July 30th, 2019, Trail revealed that Jedi would not be re-incorporated into the series or its spin-off and would instead be replaced with an original character that was revealed on August 3rd, 2019, to be Gravis the Mad, who would serve as an antagonist in the spin-off to distance the main characters from creator inspirations. On August 7th, 2019, Trail added Hardwell Graves / Father Malison as an analog to Jericho Drumm / Brother Voodoo, while on October 25th, 2019, the Wandering Ghouls were added as analogs to the Mindless Ones.

Continued work under new direction

On December 30th, 2019, Trail revealed that Master Evandar's first name was Graham to add more humanity to the character, while he began to phase out the creator-inspired content from the series with Shade the Apprentice and Miles the Mage having their roles replaced with Piers the Apprentice and The Mystic Mage, respectively, although noted that those names were temporary. As a result, the Shade the Apprentice spin-off series was scrapped in favor of the anthology series Blaze Enchanters, which was set to premiere on February 3rd, 2023 and be centered on the Blaze Enchanters order, an analog to the Masters of the Mystic Arts from the MCU that Trail had conceived at that time, with Gravis the Mad being re-purposed for parts of that series along with the characters Rupert the Gleaner and J. Z. Warlock, who had been renamed from S.J. the Warrior and J.C. Warlock, respectively. With the removal of the initial spin-off series, Trail also chose to abandon prior plans for Doctor Trail's disappearance in the first season of this series as he began re-evaluating the series' intended direction to be in-line with storylines from several Doctor Strange comics.

On January 18th, 2020, Trail announced new plot details for the series which were closely adapting from what was Scott Derrickson's intended direction for the MCU films Doctor Strange (2016) and particularly Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) to follow the example of The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005-2012), which were set to be depicted for the first season and an intended second season, respectively, and was pursued by Trail after Derrickson stepped down from directing the latter film on January 9th, 2020, which prompted him to fulfill that vision. By then, Trail added Doctor Trail's full name as Doctor Travis Sebastian Trail, alongside Hailey Pointe as an analog to the Linda Carter and Christine Palmer versions of the Night Nurse. On February 1st, 2020, Trail chose to rename the main character to Doctor Travis Sebastian Blase and the series to Doctor Blase so they would feel more realistic and to have a more personal relation to Trail himself, setting it apart from the Doctor Trail film and the prior creator-inspired elements from the early developments of the series, while the following day, Master Graham Evandar was renamed to Count Earl Lysander and re-positioned as a protagonist for the first season as an analog to Baron Karl Mordo, in addition to a proper Kaecilius analog being added as Sinistero, with a second season, also consisting of thirteen episodes, being ordered to premiere on June 3rd, 2022, taking that time slot from Shade the Apprentice. The voice cast led by Josh Keaton as Doctor Blase was assembled the next day, and by then, Piers the Apprentice and The Mystic Mage were renamed to Piers the Novice and The Arcane Shaman, respectively, with the additions of the analog characters Oliver Davenport, Sylvester Grey, and Ahman analogizing Nicodemus West, Jonathan Pangborn, and Hamir the Hermit, respectively.

On February 9th, 2020, Trail announced that the character of Natalie Van Helsing / Luminous Hex, an analog to Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch who appears in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, would be featured as a major character in the second season after previously being planned to serve as an interpretation of the Vesp character that was initially planned to appear in the series, while analogs to Nightmare, Immortus, and the Space Phantoms were also announced as Gehenna, Amaranth, and the Time Apparatuses, respectively, due to Nightmare's intended appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the latter two being including in Trail's ideas for that film. Trail also announced that Hailey Pointe would take on the mantle of Lady Death, originally conceived by Trail, after her intended death at the beginning of the second season, that Piers the Novice would be killed off in that season, the Eye of Flarez would be destroyed alongside the Cloak of Temptation and the Sting Rings, all of which had been reported as part of Derrickson's plans for their analogies in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness while the Eye of Flarez's destruction was adapted from Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and was intended to be restored by Doctor Blase in the second season through the use of time manipulation with Amaranth. On February 12th, 2020, Bryce Johnson was cast to replace Keaton as Doctor Blase to reprise his prior voice role of Doctor Strange from the animated film Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme (2007), and on February 15th, 2020, Trail officially announced the premiere and conclusion dates for the first and second season that he had planned earlier.

Expansion and release shifts

On February 19th, 2020, Trail expressed interest in developing a spin-off of the series to be set after the events of the second season with the potential for it to be centered on the Luminous Hex and prominently feature Piers the Novice after his "sacrificial death" in that season, and on March 17th, 2020, during Part 1 of the debut Trail Blazer Experience presentation, Trail stated that he was planning on developing the Luminous Hex spin-off series, although noted that nothing was officially set for it by then. Trail confirmed that the series was moving forward as Van Helsing Hex during the Easter presentation event for Trail Blazer Experience on April 4th, 2020, with the premiere set for November 4th, 2022.

On April 21st, 2020, Trail pushed forward the premiere date for the first season of Doctor Blase from August 6th, 2021 to February 5th, 2021 to have it now conclude on April 30th, 2021, as he had developed a majority of the plot for it while continuing work on the episodes, and announced that the second season premiere date was also pushed forward to May 13th, 2022 and would now conclude on August 5th, 2022, to be in-line with the initial May 7th, 2021 release date for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and to have it release closer to the November 5th, 2021 release of that film after it had been delayed to it on April 3rd, 2020, resulting in the June 3rd, 2022 premiere date that had been thrown around for several of Trail Blazer Studios' television series to go unoccupied. At this time, the premiere and conclusion dates for Blaze Enchanters were also officially announced, which caused the premiere for Van Helsing Hex to be moved forward to October 7th, 2022, as to not have it overlap with the other series.

After further delays on April 24th, 2020 caused the release for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to be delayed to March 25th, 2022 to accommodate for the initial November 5th, 2021 date being set for the sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Trail stated the following day on April 25th, 2020 that the series' release schedule would remain intact as he began focusing on continuing work on the first season rather than the second season due to its base concepts being further distanced than beforehand, acknowledging that it would now premiere two months after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Consequentially, due to the delays which saw the October 7th, 2022 date become further occupied by the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and a Marvel Studios film, the premiere of Van Helsing Hex was pushed back by two weeks to October 21st, 2022, to avoid competition with other Marvel-related properties while still avoiding interfering with the premiere of Blaze Enchanters.
